Multimedia installation artist Lynn Hambrick received $3,700 to travel to New York City for one month, with day trips to Boston and Philadelphia. She will attend theater and performance arts events, strengthen the performance aspect of her work, and make contact with creators, museums and galleries. The timing of her travel coincides with an exhibition of Hambrick's work in New York at Franklin Furnace.

Kathleen Maloney, Managing Director of Intermedia Arts, received $1,000 to spend six days in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Monica and San Diego, California. The trip is to learn about other multidisciplinary and media centers; to become familiar with the technical and operational aspects of other presenting and gallery spaces; and to improve and validate her own skills as an administrator. Maloney will investigate how other media center have adapted to changing artists' needs and burgeoning technologies and how they've shaped their services as artists' needs dictate. Among the organizations she'll visit are Film Arts Foundation, Life on the Water and Intersections for the Arts in San Francisco; the Museum of Contemporary Art and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions in Los Angeles; Sushi and Border Arts Workshop in San Diego and Highways in Santa Monica.

Filmmaker and public TV producer Sally Mendzela received $3,058 to spend three weeks in Japan. The central focus of the trip is observation and study of American cultural workers living in Japan. Mendzela is interested in their choice to live in Japan and how their backgrounds affect their work. In Sendai, Kyoto and Tokyo, she'll visit with artists, administrators, public television producers and journalists. Her intent is to create an evocative videotape record of her trip that blends elements of myth-making with that of documentary.
